Fall Foods for a Fresh Smile

A diet low in nutrients can lead to gum (periodontal) disease, which can lead to tooth decay. Carbohydrates, sugars, and starches leave more plaque on your teeth than other foods, and that plaque attacks your enamel causing tooth decay.

A well-balanced diet supplies the proper nutrients for a healthy smile. If your diet is lacking, then your mouth is more prone to infection. Many Fall foods, however, are excellent for your health. These foods for healthy teeth are both Fall and year-round favorites that will be easy for you to incorporate into your diet this season.

  • Yogurt – Enjoy a cup of yogurt on a daily basis. It has ingredients that fight bacteria naturally, which prevents cavities and tooth decay. A great source of protein, it also contains a good amount of calcium that helps build strong teeth.
  • Bananas – These are very versatile fruits that pair nicely with almost any type of meal. They are also less expensive than other fruits.  Bananas provide potassium and fiber along with vitamins and minerals.  They are available year round.  You can also use the peel to whiten your teeth.
  • Apples – This well known Fall food aids your teeth two ways. One, they are rich in fiber and calcium. Two, they sweep food particles away from your teeth while you are eating them.
  • Pumpkins/Squash – This popular Fall food digests easily and has a lot of strong ingredients to fight cavities.  Magnesium levels are also high, which can improve the density of bones and teeth.
  • Green Leafy Vegetables – Low in calories, they are full of vitamins and minerals. They are high in calcium to rebuild tooth enamel. Spinach and kale are the greens of choice.

Almost all foods, including healthy ones like vegetables and milk, have some sugar in them. It is important to retain these in your diet while eliminating the ones with little or no nutritional value, such as candy, cookies, potato chips, etc.

Top off these foods for healthy teeth with water; it is your best option since it has no sugar in it.  Remember, a healthy diet makes a big difference when it comes to enjoying a healthy smile.

Along with a healthy diet, regular checkups are essential for a fresh smile. If you haven’t had a checkup in the last 6 months, make sure to schedule a cleaning today!
