Healthy Foods for Dental and Diet Resolutions

Many people make New Year’s resolutions to maintain a healthier diet, but did you know that there are foods that are healthy for your teeth as well? Keeping your teeth and gums healthy has a positive effect on your whole body. While your oral hygiene is very important, you may still have difficulty keeping your teeth healthy if you don’t watch what you eat.

Calcium and Phosphorous

Your tooth enamel is made up of minerals and certain food and drinks can erode it. Calcium and Phosphorous rich foods help to restore your enamel and make your teeth strong again. Some calcium rich foods include:

  • Almonds
  • Low-Fat Milk
  • Yogurt
  • Hard Cheeses
  • Seafood
  • Tofu

Some of the best foods to eat that contain phosphorous are:

  • Eggs
  • Brazil Nuts
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Red Meat
  • Fish
  • Tofu
  • Broth

Crunchy Foods

Crunchy, water-filled foods are great for your teeth in two ways. One, the chewing stimulates saliva, which helps neutralize bacteria on your teeth that can lead to cavities. Two, their texture makes them naturally abrasive, which helps to remove plaque and particles of food. The best crunchy foods include:

  • Apples
  • Celery
  • Carrots
  • Cucumbers

Vitamin C

Foods containing vitamin C have many dental benefits. They keeps your gums healthy by strengthening blood vessels and reducing inflammation. They also produces collagen, which is a protein that helps you fight periodontal disease. Some great sources of vitamin C are:

  • Strawberries
  • Broccoli
  • Kale
  • Oranges
  • Kiwi
  • Bell Peppers

Vitamin D

Vitamin D helps you to absorb calcium better. Some of the best sources of vitamin D are:

  • Egg Yolks
  • Fish
  • Cod Liver Oil

In addition, sunlight is the greatest source of vitamin D, so be sure to get your share.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants have numerous health benefits, one of which is fighting bacteria that causes inflammation and periodontal disease. They also help protect gums from bacterial infections. Sources of antioxidants include:

  • Raisins
  • Grapes
  • Nuts
  • Beans
  • Apples
  • Berries

Probiotics

Probiotics are some of the “good bacteria” that your body needs to be healthy. There is also some evidence that they help reduce plaque and promote healthy gums. Foods that contain probiotics include:

  • Yogurt
  • Miso
  • Sauerkraut
  • Kombucha

Choose some of these foods to include in your diet to maintain healthy teeth and a healthy body, because it’s never too late to make that resolution.

Couple these better foods with bi-annual teeth cleanings for great long-term dental health.
