Sedation Summer: Everything You Need to Know
Sedation dentistry is a dental procedure done while the patient is sedated. This ranges from minimal interventions, which gently relieve feelings of anxiety, to conscious sedation. At Shoreline Dental Studio, several options are available, all carried out by our friendly, highly trained team. The goal is to keep you as comfortable as possible from start to finish.
Oral Sedation
Taking an oral sedative might be all you need for a comfortable appointment. This makes you drowsy and calm and helps to numb mild pain. Your dentist will select medications based on your medical history and the length of the procedure. The effects last anywhere from two to eight hours – making the whole experience much more manageable for you.
Nitrous Oxide
Commonly known as laughing gas, the effects only last a few minutes after the face mask comes off, so your dentist will keep administering the gas throughout your appointment. This is safe for children, too – and you can drive yourself home after your appointment, with minimal downtown required!
Conscious Sedation
If you need oral surgery or have overwhelming dental anxiety, conscious anesthesia can be a great option. It serves a dual purpose: relaxing you and blocking the sensation of pain. You might become drowsy, but you’ll still be aware of what’s going on in the room.
It takes 30 minutes to an hour to take effect, and you’ll need to wait a little while after your procedure for it to wear off – not longer than a couple of hours. Note that the Summer Sedation special does not cover IV administration.
