A healthy smile is highly dependent on what happens between visits to see us. Good oral care habits can be established by anyone committed to carving a few minutes out each day to make it happen. Like regular exercise, consistency builds on previous efforts to enhance your health. At least two brief sessions of brushing and cleaning between your teeth daily set a foundation for optimum health.
With so many products available to consumers today, your hygienist serves as a personal trainer when it comes to dental home care. We’ll quickly narrow down the endless options and form a plan that fits you. Would a Waterpik make more sense and reach deeper than floss for your condition? Should you use a prescription toothpaste due to high risk from a reduced saliva condition? Many factors fit into a plan that makes your time and effort work for you.
Some patients identified with high risk for dental problems benefit from even more personalized routines. Simple, inexpensive additions can transform the environment of your mouth and dramatically reduce disease activity. For example, Xylitol is a naturally-derived sweetener that can reduce cavity activity in children and adults when used in the right dosages and exposure times.

“Best dental experience ever! Everyone is so sweet, caring and incredibly knowledgeable and confident. I was super nervous about going to dentist after not having gone for awhile but as soon as stepped into the studio I felt like I was in good, loving hands and had nothing to worry about! Everyone is so great about creating a calm and friendly experience:) Dr. Livingston is the best!”

“It’s a friendly, welcoming and stress free environment. From the candle in the reception area to the windows in the treatment rooms looking out on a garden, it feels very non-dentist like, which is actually a good thing. They addressed the issue I had come in for and didn’t try to upsell me on other unnecessary treatments. I actually found a dentist’s office that I like!”

The basics of daily dental health include brushing your teeth twice a day with a soft brush and flossing at least once. Your dentist can show you proper brushing and flossing techniques to make sure you’re doing the best possible job. Taking care of your general health—including maintaining a good balanced diet—is also part of protecting your oral health. If you smoke, we strongly encourage you to quit, or at least cut down—smokers tend to have far worse dental health.
Taking proper care of your dentures helps them do their job and last longer before needing replacement. Always rinse them with cold water after eating to remove food particles and debris. When you remove them at the end of the day, rinse and brush them carefully clean according to your dentist’s instructions. You should take the opportunity to clean your mouth as well. Most dentures need to be soaked overnight, but check with your dentist about how they should be stored when not in use. Be very careful when handling them. Regular dental checkups will help you and your dentist catch any small problems before they become big ones and make appropriate adjustments.
It’s essential to follow your dentist or oral surgeon’s instructions to the letter after your surgery. The basics of post-removal care are pretty straightforward. Keep the extraction sites clean to prevent infection, and brush and floss the rest of your teeth as normal. Stick to soft foods until you get the okay from your oral health professional. Rest a lot to allow your body to recover and heal—no exercising, no lifting heavy things, just take it easy. You can use an ice pack to help the swelling go down.
Twice each day—and floss at least once a day, too!
